The Skype Revolution Has Been a Boon for the Bootstrapping Home Business

by Martin Neumann ~ May 8th, 2008

With more than 300,000,000 users worldwide, Skype has revolutionized - or is that shook up - the way that we communicate.

Traditional telcos have been hit hard because gone are the days of high cost of making telephone calls - with Skype you either go free via a skype-to-skype call or pay literally pennies for skype-to-landline calls.

And it gets even better…

Skype recently announced that it is offering new subscriptions.

The new subscriptions offers a monthly flat rate for international calling to landline numbers in 34 countries. There are two options:

1) Unlimited World for $5.95 per month where you select one country from the list of 34 - so if you know that you will be calling lets say only to clients in the UK, then this would be the one to go with.

2) Unlimited Worldwide for $12.95 a month which pretty much allows you to call to landlines in any of the 34 countries listed.

A flat rate! No more timed calls. Obviously there are limits: 10,000 minutes per month which account to about 5 hours a day. That seems quite fair.

And it even gets better…

“If you purchase one of the new subscriptions for a 3-month or 12-month period before June 1st 2008, you will receive a further 33% discount.”

Go and take a look for yourself at Skype…

I’ve just purchased a 12-month subscription and I would advise (especially my beta clients over at HomeOfficeMentor.com) to do the same - especially if your business is internet-based and/or you’re bootstrapping it.

It’s All About the Bottom Line

Here’s why I’m so enthusiastic about this offering. Only 5 years ago my monthly telephone bill was on average $120 a month (around $1,400 a year). Today … $12.95 x 12mths plus the 33% special = $103.

Now you don’t have to be a business guru to know that paying around $100 a year rather than $1,400 is a sweet deal.

I think those figures speak for themselves. :-)

All business - big and small - are always looking to cut costs, and this is more so for any start up or home-based business.

Are You Using Skype to its Fullest Potential?

In my own mentoring program and at this site, I get this feeling (a gut instinct, you might say) that we are all not getting the most out of what Skype offers - hint: there’s more than just basic calling … so much more.

And that’s my queue for announcing an upcoming (and ongoing) special on Everything Skype.

It’s one web tool that has literally changed the way we do business … for the better!

I actually shut my landline off last month and use Skype for all my outgoing calls. I went from over $200 per month to some pocket change now. It has certainly helped my overhead and my peace of mind.

Grant - I don’t even have a landline anymore. I have my mobile phone (cell phones for you guys :-) , wireless internet and Skype.

But I love that there’s so much more to Skype.

How else do you use Skype?

I shut off my landline in June 2007 and have not looked back, though I also use GotVMail as my virtual PBX. My extension rings to my Skype number, which is my sole incoming and outgoing line. I used to have 6 incoming voice lines but now each staffer (all virtual) have Skype. Savings in service are huge, and hardware maintenance is of course $0.

I use Skype for conference calls, and members of the team get together for group chats often. My software developers in South Africa, my outsourcers in Bangalore, and my domestic staffers all use Skype to communicate quickly and easily.
